1913 - Beach parties have been a popular and unconventional social fad among a number of well-known families of Makawao district. The program of events has been to motor to Kuau beach, bathe and swim for an hour or two before sunset, eat basket lunches, and then chat and skylark around a blazing fire.

1938 - The public can be assured of seeing Maui's best hula dancers when the Hollywood trip hula contest starts at the Iao Theater next Tuesday. Some of the girls who have signed up are: Louise Maalea, Becky Amarel, Girlie Amarel, Nani Mahoney, Alice Kamaka, Jennie Wilcox, Virginia Rodrigues, Doral Lovell and Elizabeth Apo.

1963 - Ownership and management of historic Ulupalakua Ranch passed from the Baldwin family this week into the hands of its new Mainland owners as Gregory Baldwin, former manager, turned "over the reins" to C. Pardee Erdman Jr., former Wyoming and Nevada rancher who will now direct the ranch business.

1988 - Lynn Liu, an enthusiastic teacher who wanted to make a field trip for her students as informative as possible, has been hired by Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum as a consultant to develop educational kits for 2nd-, 4th- and 6th-graders. Liu has direct family ties to plantation life.

2003 - A state senator whose ancestors once owned Fanning Island set sail for the tiny Pacific landfall Sunday on a nostalgic visit. Sen. J. Kalani English, the great-great-grandson of Fanning's one-time owner, headed for the South Pacific atoll that was annexed by Great Britain and now is part of the Republic of Kiribati.
