I think we can agree that living longer, healthy lives is good news (The Maui News, July 19).
I certainly agree, but a few weeks ago I learned some related bad news. We are outliving our childhood immunizations. Who knew?
Believe me, whooping cough at age 76 is not pleasant and is quite painful and debilitating. For the past three weeks, I have been sicker than at any time in the past 50 years.
So I have a request for the medical community: I think it is about time that you start recommending booster shots for us older folks for some of these childhood diseases like pertussis and diphtheria. Offer them right along with flu shots, tetanus shots and shingles vaccine.
