Summer came and went. I want to give a shout-out to Mayor Alan Arakawa for allowing the County of Maui to continue its Summer Pals Program.
Mayor Arakawa was deciding whether or not to continue Summer Pals this summer because of funding, but I am so happy he allowed it to continue and even extending it to eight weeks, instead of the usual six weeks.
Summer Pals helps countless families afford safe and fun child care over the summer. The kids learn how to swim. They learn about Hawaiian culture. The children even had a chance to participate and learn about a variety of cultures at the ho'olaulea.
Living in a community that is geared toward tourism, it's great to see the mayor support a program that tremendously helps the community.
