Kihei Public Library is offering the following classes for children and adults:
* Saturday and Aug. 24, 3 p.m., Children's Section - "Brickfun Building with Lego Artist Patrick Markey."
Keiki ages 6 to 10, accompanied by a parent or caregiver, are invited to explore their creativity and learn about architecture, design and problem-solving.
Patrick Markey has been creating art using Lego toys for more than 10 years. His class is geared to children ages 6 to 10. He is pictured with his daughter, Natalya.
The session size is limited; children may sign up for only one session. All materials will be provided. Markey, a public school educator and parent, has been creating art using Lego toys for more than 10 years. The Kay A. Edwards Memorial Fund is sponsoring these programs.
* Tuesday, 6:30 p.m., Children's Section - "The Art of Japanese Calligraphy." Mitsuyo St. Klair, a multimedia artist, will conduct a hands-on demonstration of Japanese calligraphy.
St. Klair, who resides on Maui, will present a brief overview of the history behind the art form and the traditional methods and tools used. In addition, she will demonstrate how to write the Japanese word for "Love," and participants will have the opportunity to create their own calligraphy keepsake. All materials will be provided. The program is suitable for ages 12 and older.
Registration is required for both programs. Contact the library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.
