The Maui News

First Photo: The Hokule'a and its sister canoe, Hikianalia, arrived Monday at Honolua Bay, the same site where Hokule'a launched its first voyage to Papeete, Tahiti, in 1976. Led by navigator Mau Piailug of Satawal, Micronesia, the crew was able then to sail more than 2,500 miles to Tahiti using only celestial navigation. Second Photo: Representatives from Maui's Surfrider Foundation, Save Honolua Coalition, Hui O Wa'a Kaulua, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, and the community organized a ceremonial reception for both crews as they pulled into the bay around 2 p.m.
