‘Harassing the wildlife’

August 20, 2013
The Maui News
A spearfisherman reaches out to latch on to the top of a green sea turtle Saturday near Black Rock in Kaanapali. Wellington, Nev., resident William Oxx said that he snapped the picture while snorkeling with his wife and saw “a group of local youths harassing the wildlife.” Shortly after this photo was taken, Oxx said, the “turtle began twisting and struggling to break free.” Oxx said that when he told the boy he should know better than to harass the turtles, the youth called him a racial slur and said, “I ride me like a cowboy whenever I can.” Then, “the boys had loaded spearguns and pointed them at us,” he said. Oxx said that he called authorities, but there was no word on what happened as a result of his report.
