1913 -Quite a number of accidents have occurred lately through small boys falling from trees while in search of the delicious mango or the toothsome alligator pear. This week, two lads of tender years have been taken to Malulani hospital for treatment. Dr. Osmers thinks that the parents of children should keep close watch on their offspring so as to prevent similar accidents in the future.

1938 -Miss Rita Lum Ho was crowned Miss Maui Tuesday at the Iao Theater in the finals of the territorial Hollywood hula contest. Miss Lum Ho is sailing for Honolulu Monday night from Kahului to participate in the territorial finals. The Maui County Band will play.

1963 -Hotel Iao Needle's dining room and bar are scheduled to be open for regular business September 24, after being closed since last Christmas. Lodging units opened during the Whaling Spree. The hotel was sold to Treasure Craft of California for $110,000 last month. The new owners already have purchased adjacent land for expansion.

1988 -Following the dedication of Kihei School's new library, dignitaries and parents troop across the campus to dedicate the new Lokelani Intermediate School, a two-story building housing eight classrooms. The school complex, with nearly 1,300 students in all eight grades, is one of the fastest growing in the state.

2003 -An Olinda dog was attacked on its property early Sunday morning, possibly by the mysterious big cat that's believed to have been stalking the area since December. Susan Wachter, who saw the cat running into a nearby gulch three months ago, said her 60-pound black Labrador suffered two puncture wounds, a scratch and a deep gash that needed to be stitched up.
