89 feet of tapa

September 5, 2013
The Maui News

First and second photos: Maui Arts & Cultural Center gallery director Neida Bangerter examines an 89-foot-long ceremonial tapa Wednesday outside the Schaefer International Gallery. The tapa was a gift from Michael Mahuensmith of Island Sandal to artist Wes Bruce. Artist in Residence Bruce currently is using objects he has found and been given on Maui to create a mesmerizing installation at the gallery. The exhibition "Taken by Wonder" opens Sunday and runs through Nov. 2. Bangerter said the tapa was made in Tonga from coconut tree pulp that was pounded and decorated with plant dyes. She said that the tapa had been folded up and stored for as long as 50 years.
