Written comments are being sought on six judicial nominees to fill a vacancy in the 2nd Circuit District Court.
The nominees, submitted Monday by the Judicial Selection Commission, are Honolulu attorney Brian A. Costa and Wailuku attorneys Michelle L. Drewyer, Gregory J. Garneau, Kirstin M. Hamman, Georgia A. K. McMillen and Lloyd A. Poelman.
Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald, who is seeking the comments, will make the selection. He has 30 days from his receipt of the list Monday to appoint a judge.
Recktenwald has the discretion to assign judges to the district or District Court of Family Court. Comments about the qualifications and character of any of the nominees with regard to either assignment may be sent, in writing, to Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald; Supreme Court of Hawaii; 417 S. King St.; Honolulu 96813.
Comments also may be sent by fax to (808) 539-4703 or by email to email@example.com.
Comments must be postmarked, emailed, faxed or hand delivered no later than Sept. 30. All comments will be confidential.
The nominee selected by the chief justice is subject to Senate confirmation.
According to the Judicial Selection Commission, the nominees were selected from 11 applicants - five women and six men - for the position.
The judge will fill the vacancy created by the resignation in April of Mimi DesJardins as a 2nd Circuit Family Court judge. She later pleaded no contest to a criminal complaint charging her with tampering with a government record by altering judicial determination of probable cause documents on Feb. 17.
