Giving old buildings a chance

September 25, 2013
The Maui News
Lahaina artist Carleton Kinkade uses oil colors to capture a scene along Lahainaluna Road on Saturday morning. “It’s difficult with all the pale greens, but it has a chance to be a good painting,” he said. The panorama of dry field and older homes surrounded by overgrown brush is not what visitors normally see in Lahaina galleries, but Kinkade said he was drawn by “the buildings that are just hanging on.” “I usually don’t name my paintings, but I’m thinking about ‘Part of Lahaina’ because you have these old buildings that are disappearing,” he said. “And you can just see the church in the distance.”
