Photos: Soccer dad Peter Higashino helps secure the tin roof over a barbecue cooking structure to be used during the Maui Fair on Wednesday afternoon at the War Memorial Complex in Wailuku. Higashino and fellow Maui United Soccer Club parent Shayne Tamanaha were assembling the shed where the club will be cooking steak for the fundraising steak-and-rice plates. For many nonprofit groups, the fair is the main fundraising event of the year. Higashino, whose daughters have starred for the club and at Kamehameha Schools Maui, said that the fair is a "tradition." "The kids look forward to it, know that," he said. "The fair is a highlight." This year's fair kicks off with the Maui Fair Parade on Oct. 3 and runs through Oct. 6.
