FIRST PHOTO: The new lifeguard tower for D.T. Fleming Beach is unloaded and set in place Friday morning in Kapalua. The tower built by Industrial Design Research Inc. of Santa Ana, Calif., was specially built for the park and is the first of its kind. County Ocean Safety Operations Chief Archie Kalepa said he "begged" the company to make a bigger version of its standard model to accommodate three personnel. "He said, 'I need a bigger tower, I need a bigger tower,' '' said Industrial Design Research supervisor Edwin Viera. "We tried it, and it came out good." So good in fact, that Viera said the company has decided to call its new version the "Maui Tower." "It's the first tower we make like this, why not call it the Maui Tower?" he said, which was better than the company's first idea, "Super Shelter."
