Ramping up access to Maui’s oceans

October 26, 2013
The Maui News
“Freedom!” Kihei’s Jeri Jakeway calls out as she is wheeled toward Kamaole Beach Park I on Thursday following the opening dedication of the new beach access ramp funded by community donations and built by volunteers. “I’ve been swimming here for years,” Jakeway said. “It’s going to make it a lot easier to get up the hill.” Pushing Jakeway in the water access chair is Randy Beatty. Fellow Kihei resident and wheelchair user Andrew Valentine said that the ramp will help residents and visitors alike get into the water. “This is awesome,” Valentine said. He also challenged donors to buy more access chairs for county lifeguards to utilize. “We need more of them,” he said. “It’s ideal if it will get more residents out into the water.”
