Sewer line hooked up to storm drain
Ledcor Construction Hawaii is working with subcontractors, county wastewater workers and wastewater companies to clean a sewage discharge caused by an accidental connection of a temporary sewer line to a Kaanapali storm drain, said officials from The Westin Maui Resort & Spa.
The spill was detected Wednesday morning by resort officials, who contacted the state Department of Health. Ledcor Construction Hawaii and its subcontractors immediately corrected the connection to prevent further discharge, resort officials said.
A portion of Kaanapali Beach adjacent to Hanakao'o (Canoe) Beach Park was subsequently closed but reopened Thursday afternoon after microbiological testing produced negative results.
The quantity of sewage discharged is still being determined, officials said, and workers are continuing cleaning operations.
