The Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) - A 35-year-old burglary suspect shot by Honolulu police in Aiea was free on $40,000 bail and awaiting his trial in an auto theft case.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Amery Kahale-Sugimura previously had been convicted of 14 felonies and now is under suspicion for five counts of attempted murder.

Prosecutors Wednesday had not formally charged him.

Officers Tuesday were looking for Kahale-Sugimura and spotted him at 3:31 p.m.

Police say he fled on a stolen motorcycle, crashed it at Alvah Scott Elementary School and ran to a house.

Police say he struck a 68-year-old man, took his pickup, rapidly backed up and struck two officers. They were not seriously injured. Four officers fired at Kahale-Sugimura. He was struck multiple times and is reported as stable but in serious condition.
