I want to thank the committee that chose the landscaping for Mokulele Highway.
I believe members wanted to choose something Hawaiian that presently complements the 21st-century road. The brown weed-filled sides and middle with sparse native grass that grace the highway are a welcome sight, especially for the visiting tourist looking for the beauty of Maui.
Had they looked for plantings used by other states in the West, they might have discovered oleander. It is hardy and requires very little water. It is beautiful and blooms most of the year. It makes a safe barrier between on coming lanes and reduces light glare.
