1938 - The second annual plantation picnic will be held on Lanai Saturday at the ball park. Games, entertainments and lunch will head the day's program. The affair is being made possible by the Hawaiian Pineapple Co. of Lanai.

1963 - A ground-blessing ceremony is scheduled today at 10 a.m. on the site of the new Hana Medical Center. Participating in the short ceremony will be David Kahookele, a Nahiku resident who will give the blessing in Hawaiian, and the Rev. Edward Todd, a member of the Board of Trustees of Maui Community Hospitals.

1988 - After 11 years as an attorney, Benni D'Enbeau is closing up her law books. She's busy filling shelves with another kind of book, bearing titles like "The Tale of Jemima Paddle-Duck" and "My First Baking Book." Those are some of the titles on the shelves of Maui Child Toys and Books, a shop on Baldwin Avenue in Makawao, which she and her partner, Texannah Slack, opened Nov. 28.

2003 - Volunteers participating in "Spam Mania" at the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center collected 5,587 cans of Hawaii's favorite mystery meat as a food drive for the Maui Food Bank. On the mall's stage, volunteers built a "Spamtacular volcano" complete with simulated flames spurting from its crater.
