Police on Saturday were conducting a search for 46-year-old Moreira "Mo" Monsalve in Kula as part of the ongoing investigation into the woman who went missing a week ago, police said Saturday afternoon.
"The Maui Police Department is investigating this case thoroughly and following every lead. At this time I can't go into details because the case is still ongoing. We know the family is very concerned and we are working as hard as we can to find her," said Lt. William Juan via email.
He added that the search was in the area of Waipoli Road and that police were utilizing available resources to assist in locating Monsalve.
Monsalve's friend and co-worker Lisa Thompson said that more than 115 volunteers participated in Saturday's search, along with police. She said that the effort turned up a few leads that police are investigating.
Thompson said that Monsalves is "just loved by everybody" and friends and family members plan to conduct smaller searches in the coming days with another large search to be held later this week or next weekend.
Today, Trilogy Excursions will hold a benefit whale watch cruise to raise funds for the search effort and reward money for the effort to find the mother of three, who was last seen Jan. 12 at her ex-boyfriend's residence in Wailuku.
The whale watch cruise will be by donation and on a first-come, first-served basis. Check-in is at 1:15 p.m. at the Lahaina Harbor Pier 1 main loading dock, with departure at 1:30 p.m. People may call 874-5649 to register, a company official said.
On Thursday, police recovered some of Mosalve's belongings from a dumpster at Papohaku Park in Wailuku, a family friend said.
Bystanders said that the belongings recovered included a Coach purse found by a homeless man.
Monsalve is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs about 170 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes.
Anyone with information about her whereabouts is asked to call police at 244-6400.
