Molokai and Maui set to see high surf
The National Weather Service has issued a high-surf warning for north- and west-facing shores of Molokai and north-facing shores of Maui until 6 p.m. today.
Surf is expected to be in the 30- to 40-foot range today along north-facing shores. Surf on west-facing shores will be 20 to 25 feet, the National Weather Service said.
These dangerous conditions mean that only highly experienced people should enter the water. There will be large breaking surf, significant shore break and dangerous currents, according to a news release from the weather service.
Firefighters aid hiker who fell off trail
Firefighters helped a California man to safety after he fell off a trail while hiking in Iao Valley on Saturday morning.
Fire crews from Wailuku and Kahului responded to the 9:12 a.m. call.
The 57-year-old San Diego man had fallen 40 to 50 feet but was able to crawl up 15 feet before realizing he was in trouble, Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said. Two visiting hikers heard the man's yells and contacted rescuers.
Firefighters hiked three-fourths of a mile into the trail to the man's location and found him 25 feet down the side of a cliff, Mainaga said.
The Fire Department's Air One helicopter was used to lift the man from the trail.
He suffered minor cuts to his face and pain to his ribs, Mainaga said, and drove himself to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
