Working to make play more engaging

January 31, 2014
The Maui News
Eric Wride of Highwire Inc. attaches a climbing handle Wednesday onto a new Kompan playground he is installing next to the Kahului Community Center tennis courts. Wride said the equipment on the 40-by-40-foot playground is the first from the popular Danish playground manufacturer to be installed on Maui, though there are some on Oahu. He said Kompan strives to challenge and excite kids with dynamic structures. “The emphasis is to keep kids really active,” Wride said. “We try to make parks relevant again by making the equipment interesting.” Wride said the components have no paints or powder coats and are mostly made of stainless steel, hot-dipped galvanized steel and vulcanized rubber.
