Event takes aim at teen suicide prevention

February 4, 2014
The Maui News
Waikapu’s Alec Vares, 4, takes aim in a “Noodle Toss” game at Saturday’s “Care-nival” hosted by Maui Economic Opportunity’s Youth Services on the campus of University of Hawaii Maui College in Kahului. Youth Services program coordinator Leslie Lau Hee said the event highlighting teen suicide and teaching its warning signs was planned and staged by kids in the youth group. She said Maui County is second in the state in its number of teen suicides and the group has dedicated the entire year to the issue. When Saturday’s rainy weather rolled in, Lau Hee said one of the kids told her, “Rain or shine, we’re going to have the event, because there is one person out there with suicidal thoughts and we can help.”
