We had the pleasure of attending the Hawaii Youth Symphony performance at the Castle Theater on Feb. 9.
It was by far the best symphonic music we have heard on Maui in years, and all of the musicians were 18 years old and younger. Maestro Henry Miyamura was a delight to watch and an enthusiastic mentor to his students.
The theater was only one-third full and we could only surmise that people thought that because it is a youth symphony - and free - it would not be a professional performance. Nothing could be further from the truth.
We hope, in the future, that more music lovers here on Maui will support this worthy organization.
Oh, we didn't mention the wonderful piano performance by Jonathon Korth, a professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. That was icing on the musical cake. Bravo.
