1914 - The belt road should be completed right through to Hana. It will take a lot of money to finish the job. However, the present section of the road will never be of much use until the whole project is carried through to its natural terminus.

1939 - Maui High School will hold its annual dance next Saturday in the high school auditorium. The auditorium will be decorated for the occasion with balloons, streamers, bamboo and ti leaves. A prize waltz will be the main attraction with music being furnished by the Enos Orchestra.

1964 - A recommendation that Maui Technical School be moved from the jurisdiction of the Department of Education to that of the University of Hawaii in an overall community college system is being considered by Legislators. The 106-page report recommends that a state community college system be set up by 1966. Duncan Sinclair, Maui Technical School principal, pointed out the report was merely a recommendation.

1989 - The drive to fund the Maui Community Arts & Cultural Center entered the stretch last night at a gala dinner-dance attended by 600 people at The Westin Maui. Masaru "Pundy" Yokouchi, chairman of the community fund drive, last night announced that $4.3 million of the $7 million has been subscribed already.

2004 - Tamakawaya, the Oriental specialty shop that succeeded Shirokiya at the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center, is moving out of the mall, said owner Allen Tamakawaya. Shirokiya had been one of the anchor tenants of the original center, along with Liberty House, now replaced with Macy's and Sears.
