Tank readied for sweet stuff

February 26, 2014
The Maui News

(Photo) Ironworkers Ed Quinabo (right) and Joe Magaoay of Maui Industrial Metal Fabricators Inc. weld a supporting band around the base of a molasses tank at Kahului Harbor on Tuesday afternoon. They said the renovation project also includes installing a new roof atop the tank. In the Alexander & Baldwin fourth quarter and annual report released last week, A&B reported lower molasses sales due to the molasses spill in Honolulu Harbor in September that led Matson to halt shipments to the Mainland. Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co., a subsidiary of A&B, began alternatively shipping molasses to Asia, which "impacted molasses sales and margins," said a company spokesperson.
