NTSB likely to release report on plane crash in coming week
A preliminary report on a plane crash on Lanai is likely to be released next week, as federal investigators wrapped up an on-site investigation Monday, said National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Peter Knudson.
Pilot Richard "Dick" Rooney, county planner Kathleen Kern and Planning Department secretary Tremaine Balberdi were killed in the crash reported at 9:23 p.m. Wednesday, 1 mile southwest of Lanai Airport. The Piper Chieftain twin-engine plane had been chartered by Maui County. It had just taken off from Lanai Airport and was heading to Kahului Airport with five county employees, who had staffed a Lanai Planning Commission meeting that evening.
National Transportation Safety Board investigator Andrew Swick documents the wreckage of a Piper Chieftain twin-engine plane that crashed shortly after takeoff from Lanai Airport on Wednesday night. The pilot and two of his passengers were killed in the crash; three survived but are hospitalized.

Deputy Corporation Counsel James Giroux called 911 to report the crash. He had pulled two other passengers from the plane that caught on fire after the crash. Giroux and Planning Department employees Doug Miller and Mark King were flown to The Queen's Medical Center on Oahu, where they were hospitalized and being treated for second- and third-degree burns.
The plane's engines were recovered last week from the 500-foot-long debris field at the crash site.
Walgreens in Maui Lani open; Sunday event at store planned
The Walgreens store in Maui Lani opened for business Saturday with a grand opening celebration planned for Sunday, according to the manager of the new store.
Ryan Olson, the manager of the store at the corner of Waiale Drive and Kuikahi Street, said that the "soft opening" occurred Saturday. Grand opening festivities, which will include a blessing, run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday and are open to the public.
The Walgreens Maui Lani store includes a pharmacy and is a full retail store with groceries, cosmetics, Icees and other items, said Olson. The store, which is about 14,500 square feet, is open every day from 6 a.m. to midnight.
Olson said Monday that the store is currently fully staffed with 25 employees.
The Walgreens website says that there are five other stores and pharmacies on Maui in Kahului, Wailuku and Lahaina.
