The glass isn’t always greener

March 8, 2014

Aloha Recycling customer service representative Carner Abner pushes recycled glass, including HI-5 bottles, into a bin at its Kahului facility Friday afternoon. Manager Sherri Pell said Aloha Recycling processes about 155 tons of glass a month. The glass is collected at Aloha’s main facility on Amala Place, as well as at the Central Maui Landfill and four county collection sites. The collection site in Waihee is scheduled to be closed April 7. The factors leading to the closure included low utilization and the site becoming an after-hours dumping ground for all sorts of trash, such as car batteries, Christmas trees and animal carcasses.
