Maui's Mason Aquino of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui, Central Clubhouse, was named Hawaii's Youth of the Year on Thursday on Oahu.
Aquino, 17, a senior at Baldwin High School, joined Alexis Brodie, of the Army Garrison, Schofield Barracks Bennett Youth Center, who was named Military Youth of the Year, at a special event honoring them and others at the state Capitol.
The annual state youth of the year competition is a recognition program for exemplary club members who promote service to their club, community and family and also show academic success, strong moral character, life goals, poise and public speaking ability.

The candidates are youth who inspire others with their leadership, resilience and service to others, an announcement of the award said. Five candidates from across Hawaii qualified for the state event by winning their local club competitions.
Upon receiving his award, Aquino thanked his supporters, including his mentors at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui, his foster parents, church and friends.
"I am honored to be selected from among this group of outstanding youth," he said. "I promise to do my best to represent you, and all of Hawaii, well at the regional competition."
Aquino and Brodie receive $2,200 in scholarships, including a $1,000 award from Tupperware Brands, the recognition program's national sponsor. The two will participate in the Pacific Region Youth of the Year competition, which takes place in California this summer.
