Kula Highway is closed by flooding
Police closed Kula Highway at Thompson Road in Keokea on Saturday afternoon because of flooding and warned people to avoid the area of the highway near Sun Yat Sen Park in Ulupalakua, where a river of water was flowing across the road.
The National Weather Service reported a strong thunderstorm that was nearly stationary at Ulupalakua at 1:12 p.m. Wind gusts to 50 mph, frequent lightning, very heavy rain and small hail were reported to be possible.
At about 2:30 p.m., the highway was closed at Thompson Road, with the heavy rain causing asphalt to erode, said Maui police spokesman Lt. William Juan.
He said officers weren't able to reach Milepost 18.5 near Sun Yat Sen Park, where the river of water was going across the road.
