Marine from Maui retires, relinquishes duties

Sgt. Maj. Ernest K. Hoopii, the outgoing sergeant major of Marine Corps Installations East - Marine Corps Base Camp, Lejeune, N.C., stands at attention at a relief and appointment ceremony at the Goettge Memorial Field House at the base Friday. Hoopii, who lists his hometown as Maui, retired after 30 years of active duty and relinquished all duties to Sgt. Maj. Paul A. Berry during the ceremony. Hoopii was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions during his tour in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from Feb. 18, 2011, to Feb. 29, 2012.
