Gunichi “Gunji” Matsuoka, 82

Gunichi Matsuoka, 82, of Wailuku passed away on March 29, 2014 at Maui Memorial Medical Center; joining his parents Tokuta and Ichie Matsuoka. He was born on March 11, 1932 in Pu'unene, Maui, Hawaii.

Funeral Service - Sunday, April 13, 2014 at The Word of Truth Church, 40 S. Pu`unene Avenue, Kahului located across Maui Clinic and next to the Kahului Burger King. Visitation: Family Viewing 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Public Viewing: 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Service to follow: 7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Inurnment on Monday, April 14, 2014 at the Maui Veterans Cemetery in Makawao. Military Honor Team Service will be held at 9:00 a.m.

Gunichi is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Setsuko "Bess" Matsuoka; Three daughters Lynn Carroll (Brian McCafferty); Laurie (Ferdinand "Fred") Donato; Valerie (Richard) Piano; Four Grandchildren; Nine Great-Grandchildren; Brother Tokuji Matsuoka; Sisters Flora Umeno, Elaine Ishikawa, Jane (Herbert) Gokan, Betty (Robert) Sakado.

He retired from the Maui County Fire Department as the Assistant Fire Chief on December 30, 1987. His past employment were with the Business office with Kahului Development and at A&B Glass Department. He was also employed part-time at Yamamura's, Dick's Fumigation, and Roberts Hawaii. He also served in the Army. He excelled at all sports: baseball, basketball, bowling, swimming, fishing, and golf. He was devoted to serving the Lord through humble acts of kindness to all who knew him and was active in the Lord's Team Ministries - The Word of Truth Church.
