Tickets available for Inaugural Ball
The Hawaii Ballroom Dance Association will have its Inaugural Ball from 6 to 9 p.m. May 5 in the the Maui Beach Hotel's Elleair Ballroom.
Tickets are $30 if prepaid by Friday, and $45 from Saturday to the night of the ball.

Sale to support Catholic Charities
Catholic Charities Hawaii will raise funds by selling assorted specialty snacks and candies from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the entrance to Wal-Mart.
All proceeds will support Catholic Charities Hawaii in an effort to prevent homelessness and reduce poverty in Maui County, according to an announcement.

Maui Matsuri plans kickoff on Friday
Taiko performances, kendama demonstrations and kimonos will be a few of the highlights of the 2014 Maui Matsuri kickoff event sponsored by Araki-Regan & Associates, LLC, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday at Queen Ka'ahumanu Center.
The event will also feature karaoke, minyo (folk) dancing and a coloring contest sponsored by Sanrio. The event will conclude with obon odori (bon dance) practice around the stage at approximately 8:15 p.m.
The event precedes the 14th annual Maui Matsuri on May 9 and 10 at the University of Hawaii Maui College.

Italian language focus of talk
The Italian American Social Club will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in St. Theresa's Church Hall in Kihei.
The evening will begin with a potluck supper.
The guest speaker will be Italian-born Simona Patierno, who will talk about the Italian language. She will be involving the group in rehearsed conversations. Patierno will also talk about the origin of the language and translate many familiar words, phrases and sentences.

May Day concert will benefit halau
Uluwehi Guerrero and Halau Hula Kauluokala will present a May Day is Lei Day benefit concert and silent auction in the Maui Beach Hotel Elleair Room on Saturday.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The silent auction will begin at 6 p.m. Entertainment will follow by Guerrero and Halau Hula Kauluokala and Na Leo Lani O Maui, under the direction of Gale Wisehart

Class on mental health first aid
Mental Health First Aid, a free comprehensive training that teaches people how to recognize and help others who are in a mental health crisis or at risk for mental illness, will be offered from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Cameron Center auditorium in Wailuku.
The class is limited to 20 people and is geared to teachers, counselors, school administrators, law enforcement and health care professionals, security guards, human resources professionals, supervisors and managers, mental health advocates, emergency room staff, emergency medical technicians, substance abuse counselors, and homeless and outreach providers.

WWII historian to speak at meeting
Historian Harry Smith will speak at the Rotary Club of Kihei Sunrise 7:30 a.m. breakfast meeting Wednesday at the Five Palms Restaurant at the Mana Kai Maui Resort in Kihei.
Smith will make a presentation on Japanese expansion in the Pacific region during World War II. He also will discuss the strategy of Gen. Douglas MacArthur across the Pacific and share why Iwo Jima was a unique battle.

Talk about Rotary 'Down Under'
A Rotary Exchange team from Australia will give a presentation on Rotary "Down Under" at the noon meeting of the Rotary Club of Kihei Wailea on Wednesday at Mulligans on the Blue.

Schools competing in recycling contest
Old phone books may be dropped off at any Aloha Recycling HI-5 Redemption Center during regular business hours until May 20 to be eligible for a recycling contest among eight Maui schools competing for cash prizes.
Participating schools are Emmanuel Lutheran, Haiku Elementary, Hana High & Elementary, Kula Elementary, Maui High, Montessori Hale O Keiki, Pomaikai Elementary and Pukalani Elementary.
People dropping off phone books should let the staff know which of the participating schools to credit for the donation.
