'Critical thinking' topic of presentation
Kiwanis Club of Maui member dentist Les Arakaki will be the speaker at the club's noon meeting Thursday at Cary & Eddie's Hideaway Restaurant in Kahului.
He will speak about "critical thinking." This will be a short talk on how to develop this skill and use it in daily life, according to an announcement.
The meeting is open to the public and visitors are welcome. Lunch is $12.

Digitized historic newspapers on display
The Portuguese Association of Maui and the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum will sponsor a presentation on the digitized Portuguese language newspapers published in Hawaii between 1885 and 1924 at 10 a.m. Friday in the J. Walter Cameron Center. The presentation is free and the public is invited.
Sonia Pacheco, archivist for the Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives at the Claire T. Carney Library of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, will conduct the presentation.
Six Portuguese language newspapers are included in the collection. The Hawaii Historical Society collaborated in the digitizing project.

Thousands of cats sterilized at clinics
9th Life Hawaii will hold its next feline spay/neuter clinic Saturday.
As of the group's last clinic, on March 22, 9th Life Hawaii had sterilized 6,014 cats for the Maui community, according to a news release. Most of the sterilizations were done in the organization's fullyequipped surgery room.
A $35 donation is requested for the clinic, but no animals will be turned away.

Two-day sale at St. John's Church
St. John's Church in Kula will have its annual sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Sale items will include clothing, household goods, furniture and toys. Shoppers are asked to bring their own bags.
Homemade baked goods and coffee or tea will be available for purchase.

AARP will present Shredding Event
The annual Shredding Event, sponsored by the Kula Chapter of AARP, will be held from 8 a.m to noon Saturday at the Access Information warehouse, 124 Manea Place in Waikapu.
People may shred up to four boxes of sensitive material such as old checks, tax forms or anything else with personal information on it.
This year, the event will also feature a food drive for the Maui Food Bank.

Boy Scout troop to sell breakfast meal
Boy Scout Troop 22 will present its annual breakfast fundraiser at St. Theresa Church in Kihei from 7 a.m. to noon on Sunday.
The sit-down or takeout meal includes eggs, breakfast meats, fruit, beverages and all-you-can-eat pancakes for $8.
Craft fair at Queen Ka'ahumanu Center
A spring craft fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday on the first level of the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center parking garage (behind Macy's and the bus stop).
It is being sponsored by HouseMart Ben Franklin Crafts. Admission is free.
Handmade gifts, crafts, snacks and more will be available.

Restaurant sales support school programs
A fundraising event will be held at the Sangrita Mexican Grill & Cantina from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday for the Lahainaluna High School agriculture and Future Farmers of America programs.
The restaurant will donate a percentage of all sales to the programs.
Chef/owner Paris Nabavi has been a supporter of school garden programs on Maui by providing free organic seeds to teachers and by contributing to their fundraisers, according to a news release.
For several years, Nabavi and his culinary team have purchased fresh cilantro from the Lahainaluna High School farm for his restaurants.
Last year, at this same event held at his former restaurant, Cilantro, Nabavi donated $600 to the agriculture program.
BHS Class of '72 plans reunion
The Baldwin High School Class of 1972 will be joining Hawaii '72 - nine high schools from Oahu - for a 60th Birthday Reunion in Las Vegas from Oct. 24 to 27.
Class members and guests are invited. A separate function for '72 BHS classmates and guests may also be held within those dates.
