University of Hawaii athletic director Ben Jay confirmed on Saturday that the department is the subject of an NCAA investigation.
Jay did not identify which program or programs were being investigated, nor what potential violations were being looked into.
The department "acknowledges that there is an ongoing NCAA investigation of potential rules violations," Jay said.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser had previously reported that the NCAA was looking into the men's basketball program, saying an investigation was connected to assistant coach Brandyn Akana of Kaunakakai, and stemmed from an inquiry into a document concerning a recruit, but may have expanded.
Jay's statement on Saturday said: "In light of the ongoing investigation and our obligation to state and Federal laws, we are not able to discuss or share information about the investigation. Our Department considers any alleged violation of NCAA rules to be a serious matter and we have, and will continue to, fully cooperate with the NCAA staff in this matter."
