Man arrested in slaying probe freed
A man arrested in the investigation into the killing of a 20-year-old man on Molokai last week has been released pending further investigation, police said.
The 39-year-old suspect was arrested May 21, the day after Koshari Kahikili was found dead on a dirt roadway near Milepost 15 of Kamehameha V Highway in the Mapulehu area.
Police said Kahikili appeared to have sustained a head injury.
The suspect was released Friday, police said.
Man is arrested in attack on woman
A 30-year-old man was arrested Monday for allegedly abusing his former girlfriend after breaking down the door to enter her residence in Kihei, police said.
James Irvine, who gave no local address, was released after posting $6,000 bail on charges of first-degree burglary and abuse.
The victim reported the incident Monday morning, telling police that it occurred at about 10 p.m. Saturday. She said that Irvine went into the house and into her room and assaulted her, according to police. She suffered injuries to her facial area and forehead, police said.
Irvine was arrested after he turned himself in at 12:30 p.m. Monday.
Unscheduled fire burns sugar cane
About 4 acres of sugar cane burned in an unscheduled fire Monday night on Holomua Road, above the Old Maui High School at Hamakuapoko, a fire official said.
Paia and Kahului fire companies responded to the 6:59 p.m. alarm at the location about 1.5 miles above the school, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga. He said the fire was brought under control at 8:03 p.m.
No buildings were threatened, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
