The Maui News

Two teenagers were listed in stable condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center after their vehicle went off Hana Highway and dropped nearly 80 feet to the bottom of a ravine Sunday morning, Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said.

An 18-year-old male and 17-year-old female managed to get out of the vehicle that went off the side of the highway near Milepost 42.5 and landed upside down, Mainaga said. Hana and Kahului firefighters responded to a 9:55 a.m. alarm, along with the Fire Department's Air One helicopter.

The crash victims were airlifted, one at a time, to a landing zone, and were then taken by ambulance to the hospital, he said. They suffered head and neck injuries.

The crash scene was about a mile in the Hana direction of Haleakala National Park's Kipahulu District area, Mainaga said.
