Maui County firefighters held search-and-rescue mobilization training Wednesday at the Maui Fire Joint Training Center in Kahului. It was part of the Maui County Civil Defense Makani Pahili hurricane exercise, an annual statewide hurricane preparedness event. The exercise allows Civil Defense and its partner agencies to practice emergency procedures using simulated emergency scenarios. The Fire Department and the Maui Incident Management Team led the seven-hour drill that focused on command and communication and victim rescue techniques. Disaster simulations included victims trapped inside a collapsed building and car wrecks. In addition to victim rescue, firefighters trained on forcible entry, breaching walls, triage and treatment, confined space and incident management.
