‘Everybody wants to talk to Hawaii’

June 28, 2014
The Maui News

FIRST PHOTO: Maui Amateur Radio Club President Tom Worthington (left) and member Joe Bardwell test equipment Friday afternoon near Hookipa while preparing for today's emergency communications exercise in which Maui ham radio operators will be attempting to connect with as many other operators across the United States as they can. Worthington said that during last year's exercise conducted by the Amateur Radio Relay League, Maui operators made more than 2,000 contacts. While practicing Friday, they were already reaching operators from as far away as New York and Florida. Worthington said that the concrete block radio building perched atop the sea cliffs was built in the optimal place for radio for the island. "There's nothing but salt water between us and the Mainland," he said.
