WAILUKU - Eight people have requested applications for the job of Maui County police chief, which will be vacant when Chief Gary Yabuta retires at the end of the month.
As of Wednesday, no applications had been filed for the job that pays $135,000 a year, said Maui Police Commission Vice Chairman Kelly Ruidas, who is heading a four-member police commission selection committee.
He said ads for the job were published starting June 29 and will continue through July 27.
Ruidas provided the update at the commission's meeting in the chief's conference room at the Wailuku Police Station.
The deadline for receiving applications is Aug. 12. Applications, including a resume and supporting documents, must be submitted by certified mail.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and Hawaii residents for at least one year preceding appointment to the job.
The commission is seeking candidates with at least 15 years' experience as a law enforcement officer, including at least five years in an administrative position. The commission also is seeking candidates who have a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university or who are graduates of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy.
Application packets are available at the Maui Police Commission, 55 Mahalani St., Wailuku, or by calling the Police Commission secretary at 244-6440. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Yabuta is retiring July 31 to become director of the federal High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas program in Hawaii.
