Let me see if I got this right.
Our Maui County Council members declined to take action July 24 on a voter-initiated bill to impose a moratorium on genetically engineered crops until they can be proven safe (The Maui News, July 25).
Clearly, if close to 19,000 Maui voters signed the initiative, one has to wonder what are these council members thinking? Do they somehow know what science itself has yet to prove over the long term, that GMO crops are safe to eat, and safe for all of the rest of creation?
That countries in Europe that have banned growing and importing GMO foods are just plain foolish? That the health of their grandchildren and great-grand children will not be affected by GMO food?
That Monsanto really cares about the health and well-being of Maui and its inhabitants? That their re-election is a done deal when on Maui an election can be won by a 100 votes?
Our system is broken when the public needs to beg their government to make companies prove their products are safe. It becomes dangerous and negligent when products of unproven safety, GMO crops, are unleashed on the environment and the supermarket, with potential detrimental effects on the future of human food supply.
Can we please vote in a sane council?
