The next step to the genetically modified organism moratorium will be at the polls. We'll see what everyone thinks about it.
We should keep in mind what this is really about. It's not about the estimated 1,200 jobs that could be lost or the thousands and thousands of dollars that will be taken away from our economy or even the thousands and thousands of dollars and donated hours the seed company and its employees give back to the community.
This is about what's right and what's wrong. We need to accept the fact that everything we have today comes from science and technology - even those grass-fed cows and free-range chickens that every tree-hugging store has. The list is endless.
So, when you vote please do it with an educated decision, not with your emotions. Really educate yourself with good information.
The 20,000 signatures SHAKA Movement got to sign its petition, that's a huge number. Very big effort on their part. Now just imagine if those 20,000 or so made some kind of monetary donation, like maybe $5. That's $100,000, Maui County, to put toward education or fighting homelessness for our keiki.
Don't break something that's not broken.
There is nothing wrong with exporting our product because, at the end of the day, my paycheck stays here to pay for my mortgage, food and anything else I need to sustain my family. Isn't that sustainability?
