The Maui Police Department has received its accreditation renewal for another three years from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
The voluntary process undertaken by MPD for the past 21 years means that the department's policies and procedures met professional standards established by the commission for law enforcement agencies worldwide, according to a police news release. The reaccreditation followed an on-site review of the department at the end of April.
The news release said that CALEA assessors found the department in compliance with all standards and agency directives. The assessors also found MPD to be "professionally managed, highly motivated, well trained, and committed to excellence," according to the news release.
The reaccreditation was confirmed with "meritorious" distinction at a conference July 23 to 26 in Schaumburg, Ill., according to the news release. Attending this conference were now-retired Chief Gary Yabuta, Deputy Chief Clayton Tom, Assistant Chief Dean Rickard, Lt. Jeraul Pladera and Sgts. Kyle Nagano and Harry Matsuura.
MPD was the first law enforcement agency in the state to be accredited in 1996. Since then, the Honolulu Police Department and the Hawaii County Police Department also have been accredited by CALEA.
MPD is among more than 1,000 agencies worldwide that have received accreditation.
