Baxter repeats at Ultimate SUP Showdown

August 19, 2014
The Maui News
Stand-up paddler Connor Baxter of Pukalani dives across the Ultimate SUP Showdown finish line in Waikiki on Monday to repeat as male champion in the event, which made its debut last year. Maui swept the top two spots in the competition, which combines surfing and racing — Kai Lenny of Spreckelsville was the runner up, after reaching the final as the top racing qualifier. Baxter earned $5,000 for his victory, adding to a year that also includes a third straight OluKai Maliko Downwind Run championship in May, a title in the Camp David World Cup in Germany last month and a sweep of the Stand Up World Series’ sprint and distance races in Brazil in April. Former Maui resident Slater Trout finished ninth overall on Monday, and Zane Schweitzer of Lahaina was 12th. Kody Kerbox of Haiku, Noah Yap of Kihei, Livio Menelau of Haiku and Kawika Kinimaka of Lahaina were eliminated in the day’s previous rounds. Annabel Anderson of New Zealand was the female champion. The two Maui female competitors who began the day in title contention, Lara Claydon of Lahaina and Talia DeCoite of Haiku, bowed out earlier.
