Maui competitors claim three state tennis titles

Nikki Fernando competes in the USTA state junior championships that took place Thursday through Sunday at Punahou School and The Oahu Club — she won two titles, and was one of three Maui competitors to record a first-place finish. Fernando won the girls 12 singles crown and teamed with Jessalyn Lopez for the girls 12 doubles championship, while Kylee Kato finished first in girls 16 singles. In the girls 12 singles final, Fernando defeated Keilyn Kunimoto 6-1, 6-0. Fernando and Lopez won 8-2 over Kunimoto and Trystin Lopes for the doubles title. Kato was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Laura Okazaki for the girls 16 championship. Joey Baldwin was the boys 16 singles runner-up, falling 6-2, 6-0 to Sage Leaman in the final. Lopez reached the consolation semifinals in girls 12 singles play. Olivia Hoekstra (girls 14) and Zack Fernando (boys 12) reached singles consolation semifinals.
