100 Years Ago
1914 - The new residents of the Kuiaha and Makawao districts are to be given an opportunity to register before the coming primary election without the necessity of traveling to Wailuku. County Clerk Kaae has arranged to spend this Saturday for this purpose. He will be at the Haiku Fruit and Packing Company's cannery, at the Kaupakalua school and at the Makawao tax assessor's office.

1939 - Three Maui amateur contest winners will compete for the Deanna Durbin trophy at the Territorial amateur contest for singing, dancing and instrument playing to be held in Hilo at the Empire theatre. Maui entrants are Misses Mitsuyo Kitamura of Lahaina, Momiko Nouchi of Wailuku and Miyoko Itamura of Upper Paia.

1964 - There is always something doing at the Kahului Shopping Center. Saturday will be Sidewalk Day on the Mall with bargains galore from every store. There will be musical entertainment by rock and rollers The Delcrons and the Tronics. Plus there will be biddy boxing at 2 p.m.

1989 - Members of the 3rd Marines, 3rd Battalion, Dragoon Platoon weapons company, took a break at La Perouse Bay on Wednesday. The Marines have been conducting training exercises at Ulupalakua Ranch. The company hiked down from Ulupalakua to the ocean's edge to evade another unit that wanted to engage in combat.

2004 - Government leaders dedicated the Maui training base and headquarters for the Hawaii Army National Guard while bidding aloha to a group of guardsmen from Maui called up for active duty. About 70 National Guardsmen from Maui are expected to leave the island Friday for Oahu, where they'll engage in approximately two months of training. Eventually they'll head for duty in Iraq.
