Papa Avenue roadwork to begin today
Work on the Papa Avenue Reconstruction project will begin today on Papa Avenue between Makalii Street and Hina Avenue in Kahului.
Work will occur from 8 a.m. to 3:30 daily.
The project involves reconstruction of the roadway between Puunene and Kaahumanu avenues, according to a notice from Maui Master Builders Inc.
Motorists are advised to expect delays and to use caution and follow all traffic controls and devices in the work zone.

Martian 'life' topic of talk at UH center
Hiromu Nakagawa of Tohoku University in Japan will discuss "Remote Sensing of Martian 'Life':" Evidence from Haleakala" at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Maikalani University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy's Advanced Technology Research Center in Pukalani.
Recent extensive exploration of Mars by the U.S. and Europe has provided new information about Mars and has changed people's perspectives on the planet, according to a news release. Mars, sometimes called "a frozen water planet," almost certainly experienced warm and wet climate in the past, scientists say. Discussed will be scientists' attempts to find evidence of life on Mars using dedicated instruments on Haleakala.

SHAKA Movement slated to host event
SHAKA Movement will hold a "GMO Initiative Volunteer Activation & Celebration" event at 6 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Earth Temple in Haiku.
The event will feature a vegetation potluck, presentation of the campaign by project leaders and dance music with DJ Diva Deva, according to a news release.
SHAKA (Sustainable Hawaiian Agriculture for Keiki and the Aina) Movement is leading a citizens' initiative for a moratorium on genetically modified organisms in Maui County that will appear on the Nov. 4 general election ballot.
