Ask Marilyn: Odd and Even-Numbered Date Gas Rationing

Michael Marcus of Fort Lee, New Jersey, writes:

Marilyn: Does designating odd and even dates for purchasing gasoline based on license plate numbers make any difference? Some people say it does, and some say it doesn't.

Marilyn responds:

The practice isn't really rationing. Instead, it simply reduces lines, but it does a good job of that, helping save both a little gas and many freakouts while waiting. Yet half the people will be really unhappy if the practice is begun near the end of a month with 31 days!
