Ask Marilyn: Can You Sleep Too Much?
Tim Merrill of Alexandria, Virginia, writes:
Marilyn: We're constantly bombarded by messages saying too much sleep is bad for you. But can you sleep too much? I seem to need 9 to 10 hours every night to function, and I often take a nap besides. This habit earned me the nickname "Timmy Bear" in college, where friends said I was hibernating.
Certainly, you can sleep too much, but your habits are in the normal range, assuming you're healthy. So—just to be sure—mention it to your doctor. If he or she tells you that you're fine, just forget about it.
