Hey Maui News, do us a favor and do some investigative reporting on these two lingering stories:
What caused the Maalaea Fire? What caused the Cable to break 3000ft below the sea?
When this newspaper is afraid, or has been compromised to report or investigate stories as large as this you deserve to go "out-of-business"
I get why you wont print that the Maalaea fire was caused by faulty MECO lines/poles but seriously, does a cable just break at the bottom of the sea floor?
If you see lots of big signs in the same place (e.g. the road to Walmart) you should vote AGAINST that person because they;re being financed by special interests.
Candidates who are on our side don't have the money for that many signs.
Have there been any accidents due to sign waving? (I didn't think so.) We already have enough laws. The slow-down due to horn honking and waving is minimal. You catch up at the next intersection anyway, so what's the problem with this? Why spend precious time and resources on another bad law?
Speaking of wasting resources; operation green sweep was out in full force again, terrorizing Haiku neighborhoods. Can somebody please stop this nonsense and spend the money on more important stuff? Really, who is responsible for this?
BTW: I don't grow pot and I won't vote for somebody because they waved a sign but banning both are absolutely insane!
I am stunned that over 50% of people want to ban sign waving. Sign waving goes back to junior and high school days where a anyone running for office makes their personal appeal for your support. It is a historical part of running for office. Its such a down to earth politically culture part of Maui that to ban it would be equal to banning the sale of fresh fruits, banana bread and flowers on the road to Hana. Show me statistical proof sign waving has cause accidents and then I will entertain supporting your idea it is a road hazard. Frankly, I believe there are more smiling faces and honking horns in front of sign waving than actual accidents.
Alan Arakawa is the most seasoned man to lead Maui into the future. He has already been Mayor, loss a race that no one turned out to vote for and has had time to sit back and take it all in since then. Alan is the best Captain at the helm for Maui because he surrounds himself with the most competent overqualified administration. Charmine has been a good mayor, however she is a better councilwoman. With regard to renewable energies, nano technologies and private funding. Maui has yet to come out of its infancy as a county of the State of Hawaii for the United States of America. Lead us into the future Alan, we will support you, we will find the funding and be the world example for sustaining the communities needs and the eco friendly big business. The money is out there let us bring it to Maui.
Today's editorial: "the electorate will certainly have choices"
Thank goodness for choices. However, so many choices dilutes the vote so much that a failure of a mayor with union backing is most likely to win if even receiving a small fraction of the entire vote.
I agree Haiku. Alan's viewpoint was right on. Tavares has strangled our county with red tape and practiced defensive administration. She's so busy fighting people that she isn't going forward.
And what's with the millions of dollars of County provided construction work to the developers that she says she can't bill them because she doesn't know how much is owed?
Tavares is furloughing workers but letting these developers slide on the $millions they owe the county because she's too incompetent to figure our how much they owe?
Sol K. brought this up in the County Council and asked her to collect the money and pay our county workers...but she stonewalled the Council.
Good Viewpoint Alan. Tavares is making something out of nothing because she's afraid of losing her job. Too bad she isn't afraid of putting all the small business owners out of work. She has wasted our tax dollars on her pet projects (koa tables, new walls to protect her from citizens, etc...) that do no good for the community. Please distance yourself from the Tea Party so that I can vote for you!
HA HA HA - I'm surprised the MN didn't delete that last offensive post from Welcome. At any rate, believe what you want Welcome. It's just further proof that you can't fix stupid.
As for our working hours, some of us are self employed. The best thing about being self employed is that you only have to work half days, and you can choose which 12 hours you want to work!
We have good people working for the county but Tavares has created a climate where they have been turned into pettty tyrants, enforcing ridiculous administrative rules and just generally making life miserable for us residents.
Maui used to be hang loose and our county workers were able to be helpful. Tavares has turned them into a bunch of obstructionists.
Like what was that with the zoning inspector citing the Wailuku businesses for signs in their windows?!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tavares is the one who needs to apologize, not Arakawa. The whole county council is guilty of milking the taxpayers for that expensive parking lot. I doubt they would have spent so much if it were their money they were spending. That whole debacle is more indication of their arrogance towards hard-working, over-taxed citizens. She has a lot of nerve demanding an apology after destroying so many small business owners with her draconian policies.
Welcome: Your arrogance is surpassed only by your ignorance and bitterness. I suppose you thought only "losers" and people less wonderful than yourself lose their jobs and need unemployment. I'm pretty sure your former co-workers must be glad a pompous ass such as yourself was sent "down the road". Why don't you call George Bush or Dick Cheney and ask them to lend you a couple of hundred to tide you over. Now your poor family will have to put up with your childish pouting and intolerance. And yes, I have all day to reply to you pathetic whining. Bring it on, jerk-wad!
So often, Maui News editorials lack clear vision, adequate study and rely upon clairvoyance.
The water department has asked again this year that UpCountry homeowners conserve water. In previous years, for me, that meant no planting a victory garden.
But, enough is enough, this year crookneck squash, butternut squash, cucumber and zucchini are growing and are being watered. No more will fresh produce not be grown.
Close all those water meters issued between last summer and now. Stop building in Kulamanu and all over Kula.
Oh, I think I understand, no $100 bills slipped under the table by would-be vegetable growers.
btw, the person that got fired has used up all her unemployment already, so "your taxes dollars" are not longer paying for her. She is struggling on her own without a sugar daddy or rich family to provide a place for her to live. So sad. We know the lady who got her fired, her business has since gone under at the Mall. Karma!
If collecting unemployment is just a lucrative as working then maybe thats the problem. Wages are too low.
Wages are not rising as the same rate as cost of living. If we had higher wages we wouldn't need 2 and 3 jobs each to stay afloat. If we all could go back to those wonder years of our parents and only work one job then guess what? There would be 2 -3 times as many positions opened up.
People on unemployment are not lazy btw, the reason they can collect unemployment for such a long time is because they have a history of working for their money.
I know one person who had to collect unemployment because a rude customer who owned a competing business trumped a complaint against her as an employee. She was fired immediately without even being informed of the complaint. She loved her job and has not found work for 9 mos. now.
Welcome, you know what happens when you assume things, you make an a** of yourself. I have never taken unemployment, disability, welfare, or food stamps in my life.
Some advice: Stop thinking that everybody but you is a loser. You personify what you believe. Employers can sense this during the interview and are wary about hiring somebody with a bad attitude.
Welcome, I cannot believe you left yourself so exposed to your true nature by posting “I will have to compete for jobs with the losers…” Words that come to mind are: arrogant, egotistical, and vain. Etc. Who elevated you and your sorry a** above other unemployed? I hope you stay that way to teach you humility.
Welcome, your assumptions about Buffy's and my identity are wrong, but they explain how you choose your political affiliations. Get a grip,. Do you realize how much you ae contradicting yourself - in writing?
You obviously DO need "Obama" bucks (whatever they are) because you are unemployed. It's pretty amazing that I am paying taxes so that you can get your extension, but you are the one who is mad about taxes. It's even more amazing that you don't see the irony in this situation!
