I voted for Charmaine. :(( You guys can shoot me now. Im looking for a bridge high enough. Any suggestions? Im sorry Alan. I was one of your supporters but that whole Sandhills issue really tweaked me to not vote for you. I regret that decision now. Can we get rid of the mayor instead of waiting 4 years? What do we need to do to recall her? Save us!!

Hopefully, this second year is actually marked with something that improves the resident's lives. I voted for her, and am feeling a bit regretful of that decision. Her first year was noted with celebrations, Department office moves, building renovations, and a growing mayor's staff. I didn't agree with some things that her predecessor did, but at least his doings had some substance. Ms. Mayor, it's time to do something that people care about. You can start by remembering what was discussed during your campaign about what people care about.

Since the Mayor is so poorly supported, how can Maui move into a more positive state of mind? RECALL. You don't deserve to be tuned out. She doesn't deserve the title of leader for doing so. Make a statement she'll have to listen to.

I firmly believe the Mayor, in her own mind, lives in another dimension -- perhaps "Fantasy Island? -- where reality is, indeed, as she perceives it. How very sad for all of us -- especially those who knew better and voted for Alan Arakawa to remain in office. For the 58% of registered voters who couldn't even be bothered to vote in the last mayoral election: Here's a "Hillaryism" you can take to heart: "Shame On You!!!" An attorney friend of mine wrote in response to one of my previous letters to the editor wherein I pondered the possibility of a re-call election. His words: "I have looked at Chapter 12 of the county charter regarding recalls. It takes a little over 20,000 signatures to have an election. Any elector can file a petition for a recall and file it with the county clerk...then you gather the signatures. I figure if all of the TVR owners got at least 100 signatures each that there would be enough to force a re-call election."

The mayor is nothing but a political hack and does not deserve to be in office. we will never hear her respond to this criticism of her leadership because she wants to deny anyone else their opinion if it doesn't agree with her own. the mayor is the worst thing that could happen to maui's economy and overall business climate - she's making decisions on a whim without considering their far-reaching impact to the economy and the people of Maui. i voted for mayor tavares because i thought she would do good things for Maui and bring some balance to the island - instead she's proving to be one-sided unwilling to negotiate and concede on issues. the mayor doesn't realize that we live in a small community and politics here are all about give and take... but she just expects everyone to accept things her way without compromise. i'm not a realator and don't even own a home but i am smart enough to know when we have a leader that is destroying our community. No More Tavares!

why doesn't the Mayor talk to any of the many resident groups who's businesses she is shutting down? does she really want in Maui only: 1. the super-rich part-time residents 2. the owners of the large corporations 3. the people who work for them? does she really believe that it is anyone's best interst to destroy the middle class entrepreneurs? that is what makes this country and state great - entrepreneurs. and no, I'm not a realtor.

Basically all these comments are by Realtors who want our residential prices to keep doubling every three years by making sure they can continue illegally selling and marketing residential property as more expensive commercial property. They wrap themselves in the banner of "home based businesses" or "small business owners" but in reality they jsut want to price doubling party to continue. We often blame homeless people and drug addicts for the problems on Maui -- they are just a side effect of the real problem, which are the rapacious developers, real estate agents, mortgage brokers, and appraisers whos only goal is to drive up prices no matter the societal cost. Ever wonder why the homeless problem has gotten so much worse the last 4-5 years? It's a 100% direct result of median prices on Maui going from 300K to 600K.

It seems the longer the Mayor is in office the more she sinks into the shadows and frankly, I do not know who she works for. Below "poor" would be a good category to add.

The mayor proudly claims she never reads the letters to the editor or anything else negative about her.She said she learned that from her father. So obviously she doesn't care what the poll says. If we can pretend that everything is rosy, why would we need to be accountable to the people we are supposed to govern. Mayor Charmaine "Charming" Tavares has done worse than poor.

I'm so sorry that I voted for Charmaine. At the TVR hearings before the Council in 2005, as chairperson she seemed to favor a fair process to license home-based businesses, and even said that TVRs would not be closed down. But after she was elected, she reversed her position, so now I don't think she can be trusted at all, and I just don't believe anything she says anymore. For the good of Maui, she should not be our Mayor. And the Council isn't much better, either.

The Mayor's performance is a disappointment, especially her unwarranted surprise attack on home-based businesses which support the economy and allow folks to feed their families. Listening only to people who agree with her, refusing to work out differences of opinion, favoring selected interests at the expense of others -- these are tactics which divide and weaken a community. Leaders need compassion and a vision which embraces the whole community. It is also helpful if there is willingness to admit and learn from mistakes, instead of insisting on defending senseless policies.

auwe! ruined the economy of outer-laying rural and coastal communities by shutting down or not permitting little home-based businesses. ripple effect is felt in those areas.

There needs to be a category that is BELOW "poor." Poor doesn't even come close to her actual performance.
