Barger advances as competition gets under way at Pipeline
FIRST PHOTO: Kai Barger of Haiku rides out of a barrel on the way to winning his round-of-96 heat during Thursday’s start of competition in the Volcom Pipe Pro on Oahu’s North Shore. Barger, who finished third in the event last year, was one of nine Mauians still remaining in the Association of Surfing Professionals World Qualifying Series five-star event. Ian Walsh and Tanner Hendrickson of Haiku, Hank Gaskell and Dege O’Connell of Hana and Ian Gentil of Paia had yet to surf in the round of 96, while Olamana Eleogram of Hana, Granger Larsen of Napili and Dusty Payne of Lahaina received byes to the next round. Kevin Sullivan of Lahaina and Billy Kemper of Kuau were eliminated in the round of 96, and Hana’s Makana Eleogram did not advance out of the round of 112.
